PMI PMP Certification Requirements
How do I become PMP® certified?
There are over 200,000 PMP®s that provide project management services in 125 countries. To apply for PMP® certification an individual must:
- Satisfy education and experience requirements *
- Agree to abide by the Project Management Professional Code of Professional Conduct
- Complete a minimum of 35 contact hours of instruction that addresses all nine knowledge areas
- Pass the PMP® Certification Examination

* PMI® requires that a candidate with a bachelor's degree (Category 1 applicant) document a minimum of three
years/36 months unique non-overlapping professional project management experience during which at least 4,500 hours were spent leading and directing project tasks. **
A candidate without a bachelor's degree (Category 2 applicant) must document a minimum of five years/60 months
unique non-overlapping professional project management experience during which at least 7,500 hours were spent leading and directing project tasks. **

Within the toal hours of project management experience, experience in all five process groups is required. However, on a single project, you do not need to have experience in all five process groups.
