PMI PMP Certification Requirements

How do I become PMP® certified?

There are over 200,000 PMP®s that provide project management services in 125 countries. To apply for PMP® certification an individual must:

  • Satisfy education and experience requirements *
  • Agree to abide by the Project Management Professional Code of Professional Conduct
  • Complete a minimum of 35 contact hours of instruction that addresses all nine knowledge areas
  • Pass the PMP® Certification Examination
  • To obtain PMP® certification examination paper application, note that it is included in the PMP Handbook, please refer to: http://www.pmi.org/
  • Mail (no fax or email accepted) completed application, resume, experience verification form and fee ** to:

PMI® Certification Department
14 Campus Boulevard
Newtown Square, PA 19073-3299  USA

* PMI® requires that a candidate with a bachelor's degree (Category 1 applicant) document a minimum of three years/36 months unique non-overlapping professional project management experience during which at least 4,500 hours were spent leading and directing project tasks. **

A candidate without a bachelor's degree (Category 2 applicant) must document a minimum of five years/60 months unique non-overlapping professional project management experience during which at least 7,500 hours were spent leading and directing project tasks. **

If you do not meet the PMP eligibility requirements, you may want to look at the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certification.

** Leading and directing project tasks as identified in the Project Managment Professional Examination Specification. Within the total hours of project management experience, experience in all five process groups is required. However, on a single project, you do not need to have experience in all five process groups.

Maintain your PMP Credential

To maintain your PMP certification, you will need to earn 60 PDUs per three-year cycle. To learn how to renew your certification, view the current PMP Handbook found on PMI.org
